Cutrate Cultural Analysis: California Gurls

It is no secret that I am not a fan of Katy Perry's music. It is a little too overprocessed for my tastes, and I know there are a lot of other people out there who feel the same.

I thought I could do everyone a public service if rather than making you all watch that video, I would visually recreate it using pop cultural images that came up from my mind when I first watched that matched either in movement or implication, what was going on during the video.

Is it perfect? No. I admit that there are a few bare spots (no pun intended), but I think for the most part, I got the essence of the video down with all these images.

So now you don't have to watch it but you still have an idea of its content. You can thank me later.

Does it make sense? It does to me.

I actually had to watch the video to verify...but yup, you nailed it.

The irony is, I had to listen to the song a lot to get the images in the right order.

I totally agree with you on Perry. There a whole bunch of mediocre, totally talentless new music stars coming from America (Keisha, Katie, Aguilera) who are in it just for the money and fame.

Oh Ke$ha is just awful... and the fact that her s is a dollar sign says a lot about her.

yep, wonder why she didn't go for Ca$ha :))

Sure. I guess. I don't know. What was the question again? Anyway, I just thought I'd visit via Monkey's blog since you were kind enough to recommend Mexico for something to me over there.

That's about right...I actually like the song better than the video. Say what you will, but it's pop is undeniable...

DEZMOND: Diddy didn't want her to seem like she was all about the Benjamins.

XUP: Well, Luchadors are Mexico's third most prevalent export.

Ben: And I certainly wouldn't begrudge you that. Different strokes for different folks.

I haven't seen the video, but I gather it involves a lot of beaches and whipped cream?

I used to hate Katy Perry and her crap songs, until I discovered a video of her singing as Katy Hudson--a christian singer. A thoughtful, soulful singer(and I'm not religious). Now I'm sad about a culture that doesn't allow Katy Hudson to flourish but shoots re-vamped "Katy Perry" to stardom.
