What would happen if the Super Friends were really just a group of 20-somethings in New York who were just Friends?

the world would be lost, that's for sure.
I always questioned why Superman was so weak on that show, I really have. I mean, why does he need partners at all, aside from the whole "keeping the kryptonite away" angle.
