Sleater-Kinney on "indefinite hiatus"

I just happened to stop at the Sleater-Kinney site tonight and noticed that they preface the visit with a message that indicates that they have pretty much broken up. I know they are calling it an indefinite hiatus, but a lot of other bands I used to like also said they were going on an indefinite hiatus, for instance, Luscious Jackson, and of course, we all know the score about that.

As a fan of their music, I mourn the band's passing, and I will cherish their music even more than I once did, especially the politically charged One Beat which rocked my world while making me think about a lot of the issues surrounding the run-up to the War in Iraq with a little more clarity. I only hope that the members of Sleater-Kinney continue making music as individuals or as part of other groups (in addition to Janet Weiss's contribution to Quasi that is), as I want their voice to still have power in the music industry, even if it is as a divided band.

Sleater-Kinney 1994-2006
You're no rock 'n' roll fun anymore.

Farewell Corin Tucker, Janet Weiss and Carrie Brownstein... I'll miss your work together forever.

I read about his on Metafilter. Very sad.

Great post.

I was sort of caught by surprise by it myself. If I hadn't been looking for the video to "Jumpers" because of an odd set of circumstances involving one of my friends coming home from San Francisco, I may not have heard about this for a couple more days.

Thanks for the compliment D.

I grew up on Sleater-Kinney Road in Olympia, Washington (the road they got their name from) and my parents still live there. I always felt that I shared in a little bit of their fame because of it. I was very sad when they turned our little driveway into a road of it's own and we lost our Sleater-Kinney address. Today I feel kind of the same way.

Nostalgia...that is what I feel. I spent so much time in my car in college listening to "Get Up" and "Dance Song '97" driving to escape from the flood of "Live" coming from the Kappa house. When I first moved to the ATL I saw Sleater-Kinney at The Tabernacle. During my first "grown-up" relationship I dragged my (much too old to be there) boyfriend to see them at the Trocadero in Philly. One of their final shows this summer is in the same city where I first discovered their music and although I haven't listening to them in years I plan on attending to say goodbye in person.

Brandon: I can see how you could feel connected to them too and how the two feelings could be analogous.

AA: THe sad part is, I never got to see them play live. I always thought I could go see them play on their next tour... and now it is almost too late. :(

Everyone: Pitchfork has posted a piece on their breakup as well, and it includes an MP3 of Jumpers if you haven't heard it.

Get it here

I don't know the score about Luscious Jackson.

Crap. I'm out of the loop.

Was just listening to Sleater-Kinney as I jogged around the neighborhood yesterday. I always get a little burst of speed when Words And Guitar would come on. Damn. That sucks.

I always thought the guitars going into the chorus of "Banned from the End of the World" was a great bit of sprinting music myself.
