I think there is merit in reading the novels - in that the Potter universe is referenced frequently and I like to know what's what. Plus they aren't bad really.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I didn't imply that I was too good for them or anything. I know they are entertaining and well-written reads. I just haven't gotten around to them yet.
I was required to read the first one for a children's lit class back in library school. At the time, I was going to school full time and working full time. So I walked into a bookstore one day and gave myself three hours to read the first book. I didn't enjoy it, but I never really gave it a chance.
