Remembering "The Long Kiss Goodnight"

Sometimes you can have great elements in a movie and it just doesn't work out. Of course, when Renny Harlin and Geena Davis are involved... well, it seems a little shakier *coughCutthroatislandcough*.

The Long Kiss Goodnight

Which brings me to 1996's The Long Kiss Goodnight which is sort of a movie that fell through the cracks. I know it isn't a great movie, but it isn't horrible either. And considering it is very much a winter movie and we are in the midst of a sweltering summer, it seemed like something worth talking about.

The movie stars Geena Davis as a housewife named Samantha who discovers, with the help of black private dick named Mitch Hennessey played by the Samuel L. Jackson, that she has a hidden past as an assassin. To this day, I still wonder if Mr. Jackson was the original choice for that role, but I can't see anyone else playing it now, because he just brings so much to the role.

And like a lot of Samuel L. Jackson movies, it does have some really great quotable lines as well.

Samantha: Easy, sport. Got myself out of Beirut once, I think I can get out of New Jersey.
Mitch Henessey: Yeah, well don't be so sure. Others have tried and failed. The entire population, in fact.

Samantha: What, are you a Mormon?
Mitch: Yes, I'm a Mormon. That's why I just smoked a pack of Newports and drank three vodka tonics.

unknown man over radio:
I'm hurt real bad. I think I'm dying.
Timothy(Craig Bierko): Continue dying. Out.

And my favorite line: Mitch: That's right! You can't kill me, m*****f*****s! It was part of this Sam Jackson voice pack for Unreal Tournament I had, and I loved hearing it every damn time.

And the TV dub of "Die screaming my old friend" is right up there with the TV dub of an infamous John Goodman Scene in The Big Lebowski where he says "This is what happens when you meet a stranger in the Alps!"

There is a lot of action (shooting, explosions and the like) and my favorite thing in an action movie... when people get busted up, they get progressively worse looking throughout the movie as injuries mount. The immediate recovery of characters after trauma in movies is one of my pet peeves, but that is a story for another night.

Strangely enough, I found the script for the movie online, so if you like it too and you haven't seen it in a while, this may be the cheapest way of doing it (that or waiting for TBS to show it again).

But speaking of Samuel L. Jackson and winter activities, I naturally thought of this little vid too. Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to add this one to my Netflix Queue. I'll come after you if it sucks.

Oh shizzle, The Long Kiss Goodnight. Man, there was a while there where all things Shane Black were just amazing to me including this movie which really just has great moments but in retrospect doesn't hold up that well as a whole. Ah but thanks for takin me back, MC -- niiice.

TJ: Well, if you learn anything from the movie, you'll know how to come after me then.

Schad: I didn't say it was a masterpiece... it is likeable though. Somehow I knew you would comment, although I thought it was going to be about the whole escaping New Jersey thing. ;)

I love Samuel. In fact: I would love to have him with me on any occassion where there is people being rude towards me involved... Wouldn't that be great? Just have them verbally fucked up by Samuel L.J.?

Even when the movies suck, Samuel Jackson always brings his best game. This movie was alright, the only thing I didn’t like was when the two of them out ran an explosion.

I'll have to check this one out for rental

Dutchy: And then both parties have a great story. You would have the tale of how Sam Jackson kicked some ass for you and the receiving party would be able to tell the tale of how they got bitchslapped hard by Samuel L. Jackson. Yes they deserved to cry, and he hopes they get burned mercilessly in hell.

semaj: Oh like Formula 51. WHAT WAS THAT?!?

I'm not expecting to add it to my top ten list of all time favourites but it does sound pretty funny.
